Understanding Tattoo Healing Techniques: What You Need to Know
Tattoo healing is a natural process where your skin repairs itself after being punctured by tattoo needles. This process usually takes about 2 to 4 weeks, but it can vary depending on your skin type, the size and location of the tattoo, and how well you care for it. Often times a new tattoo can feel like it is healed within a few days but there is still healing occuring below the skin's surface.
Here are some key tattoo healing techniques to keep in mind:
Keep it clean: Gently wash your tattoo with lukewarm water and mild, fragrance-free soap twice a day. Avoid scrubbing or using harsh products. THIS is the most important step of your tattoo aftercare.
Moisturize regularly: Apply a very thin layer of aftercare ointment (we recommend Aquaphor) or a fragrance-free lotion to keep the skin hydrated. Be sure to wash your hands before applying ointment/lotion.
Avoid picking or scratching: It’s normal for your tattoo to become itchy and peel, but picking at it can cause scarring or color loss.
Protect from the sun: Keep your tattoo out of direct sunlight during healing, and once healed, always use sunscreen to prevent fading.
Wear loose clothing: Tight clothes can rub against your tattoo and irritate the skin.
The healing process usually takes about 2 to 4 weeks, but it can vary depending on your skin type, the tattoo’s size, and where it’s located. During this time, your tattoo will go through several stages:
Initial healing (days 1-6): The tattoo will be red, swollen, and may leak plasma or ink. This is your body’s way of protecting the area.
Peeling and itching (days 7-14): Your tattoo will start to peel, similar to a sunburn. It might itch, but try not to scratch.
Settling in (days 15-30): Peeling layer of skin falls off, and your tattoo looks clearer. The skin might still feel dry or tight.
By following these steps, you’re giving your tattoo the best chance to heal beautifully.

What is the best thing to put on a new tattoo to help it heal?
One of the most common questions we get is about the best product to use on a new tattoo. The answer is simple but important: use a gentle, fragrance-free, and non-comedogenic ointment or lotion. We prefer Aquaphor but A & D ointment, Lubriderm, or cocoa butter can be good options as well. Products branded specifically for tattoo healing are good options but often more expensive and not readily available.
Right after your tattoo session, your artist will cover the tattoo with a bandage which can stay on for 2-24 hours. Once you remove the bandage, wash the tattoo gently with hot soapy water, air dry and apply a thin layer of ointment. Avoid heavy creams or petroleum jelly that can clog pores.
After the first few days, you can switch to a fragrance-free lotion to keep the skin moisturized without suffocating it. Applying too much product can be counterproductive, so less is more here.
This part may sound crazy but some individuals can dry-heal their tattoos. As long as the area is kept clean the dry method can work out just fine.
Our shop does not apply products like Saniderm, however if you are confortable using this method feel free to use it.
How do I make my tattoo heal fast?
We know the feeling - you want your tattoo to look perfect as soon as possible. While healing takes time, there are ways to support your body and speed up the process safely:
Stay hydrated: Drinking plenty of water helps your skin heal faster.
Eat nutritious foods: Vitamins A, C, and E support skin repair. Think fruits, veggies, nuts, and lean proteins.
Avoid smoking and alcohol: Both can slow down healing and increase infection risk.
Keep your tattoo clean: Follow the washing routine twice a day, but don’t overwash.
Don’t pick or scratch: It’s tempting, but picking scabs can cause scars and patchy ink.
Use a humidifier: If your home is dry, a humidifier can prevent your skin from drying out.
Get enough rest: Sleep is when your body does most of its healing work.
The above tips are simply suggestions but not necessary. If you notice signs of infection like excessive redness, pus, or fever, don’t hesitate to see a healthcare professional. Healing fast is great, but healing safely is better.
Common Mistakes to Avoid During Tattoo Healing
We’ve seen many people unintentionally slow down their healing by making a few common mistakes. Here’s what to watch out for:
Ignoring hygiene: Not washing your tattoo properly can lead to infections. Always use clean hands and gentle soap.
Over-moisturizing: Applying too much ointment can trap bacteria and cause breakouts or irritation.
Exposing to water for too long: Avoid swimming pools, hot tubs, and long baths during healing. Stick to quick showers.
Sun exposure: UV rays can damage your tattoo and cause fading or blistering.
Picking scabs or peeling skin: Let your skin shed naturally to avoid scars and patchy ink.
Re-Covering your tattoo with a bandage: In most cases this is not necessary and can even prolong the healing process. Tattoos often heal faster when they are allowed to breathe.
By steering clear of these pitfalls, you’ll help your tattoo heal faster and look better.
How to Support Your Tattoo’s Long-Term Health
Healing doesn’t stop once the peeling is done. To keep your tattoo looking fresh and vibrant for years, consider these ongoing care tips:
Hydrate your skin daily: Use a good moisturizer to keep the tattooed skin supple.
Protect from sun damage: Always apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 when your tattoo is exposed.
Stay healthy: Good nutrition and hydration support skin health and healing.
Touch-ups when needed: Tattoos can fade over time. Don’t hesitate to reach out for touch-ups when necessary. If the tattoo was originally done by one of us we offer free touch-ups for one year following the initial tattoo. See our shop policies for more.
Taking these steps will help your tattoo age gracefully and remain a source of pride.
